Call For Participation
Usability in Practice is an exciting new category for CHI 2002 that focuses on how usability practices have evolved over the past decade. The emphasis will be on innovations that have occurred, and which methods and combinations of methods have produced the best results. The presentations in these sessions will concentrate on the best practices in usability methods, so that attendees and participants can benefit from the great work of those practitioners who are innovating and evolving the usability methods in industry.

In order to attract and accommodate the practitioners and innovators in the field, submissions will be done by filling out the nomination form. Presenters can nominate themselves or others in the field, and should describe the specific contribution in their nomination. Preference will be given to submissions that address the conference theme of Changing the World, Changing Ourselves.

Types of Submissions
This category will focus on usability methods and their efficacy as the methods evolved over the last decade, and will include innovations and current best practices. Presentations will be grouped by themes, such as field studies, lab studies, and participatory design. Each session will have a moderator who is responsible for writing a summary paper on the session for publication in the CHI 2002 Extended Abstracts. Preference will be given to submissions on the following topics: demonstration of the efficacy of a method, how a method was initially created, how a method evolved or changed over time, and innovative methods.

Review Criteria
Each nomination will be reviewed on the basis of its contribution to the innovation and evolution of usability methods. Nominations of experts who have been involved in the creation and evolution of methods are welcomed, along with members of the field who have demonstrated an innovative and superior approach to the original methods. Nominations that include comparisons of the effectiveness of methods will be welcomed.

Upon Acceptance
Nominees will be notified of acceptance or rejection by 12 November 2001. Moderators will be required to coordinate with presenters in advance and prepare a 5-6-page summary paper of the presentations, including title, author information, abstract, key words, body, and reference. Presenters will be required to provide materials to the session moderator for the summary paper. The summaries of accepted Usability in Practice submissions will be published in the CHI 2002 Extended Abstracts. The primary author of each accepted session will receive an Author Kit with detailed instructions on how to submit camera-ready materials for publication. These materials are due 7 December 2001.

At the Conference
Sessions will have specific themes, with a moderator and presenters. The moderator will provide a background at the beginning of the session and summary at the end, with presentations in between. Presenters will also answer questions from the audience and address any issues raised by the moderator.

Nominations
Nominations will be accepted for individuals who are suited to present on the topics listed above. Self-nominations are welcome. All nominations will be confidential. The review committee will determine whether the accepted nominee will be a presenter or a moderator.

A nomination for Usability in Practice should include the name of the nominee, a detailed description of the nominated work, the dates of the nominated work, and the reason for nomination. The detailed description should identify the type of method and describe whether the method was created by the nominee or was an adaptation of an existing method, a sequential use of multiple methods, or a combination of methods. Also, any data to support the efficacy of the method should be included. People are encouraged to nominate both themselves and others. All accepted nominees will be notified of their acceptance to ensure that everyone will be able to present at the conference.
